Hello, and thank you for your interest in my work! My name is Janel Foo, and I am a stained glass artist based in Pasadena, California. Originally from Huntington Beach, I earned a degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising from San Francisco State University, which led to an early career as a wardrobe stylist in the entertainment industry. However, my artistic journey took a new direction when I discovered my passion for stained glass when I went back to school to earn a certificate in Jewelry Design. What started as a spark of curiosity quickly grew into a lifelong dedication to this craft. My designs are deeply inspired by the elegance of Art Deco and the precision of geometric forms, which inform the balance and harmony of my work.
In 2015, I founded Janel Foo Glassworks, where I design and handcraft unique stained glass pieces that blend traditional techniques with contemporary design. While my studio was originally based in Highland Park, it is now in Pasadena, where I continue to create every piece by hand with care and intention.
One of the most meaningful milestones in my career has been launching the initiative Create to Stop Hate. This project, born from a desire to address anti-Asian hate, raised nearly $50,000 for Stop AAPI Hate and spotlighted the talent within the AAPI creative community. My work and efforts have been featured in publications such as The Los Angeles Times, MarthaStewart.com, and T Magazine by The New York Times. I’ve also had the privilege of collaborating with retailers like West Elm and Nordstrom, as well as competing on the first season of Meet Your Makers Showdown on Discovery+, an incredible experience that challenged and showcased my skills among other talented makers.
In late 2022, I embarked on a new chapter as the owner of Stained Glass Supplies, a beloved Pasadena shop that has served the community since 1977. It’s a privilege to carry on this legacy, offering high-quality supplies and guidance to both seasoned artisans and those new to the craft.
When I’m not in the studio or running the shop, I love spending time with my toddler, trying to cudde with my cat Frankie as she runs away from me, enjoying ice cream, experimenting in the kitchen, and playing soccer. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me, my journey, and the passion that fuels my work. I look forward to connecting with you through the timeless beauty of stained glass.
